Origin

A single vineyard wine from the Waihopai Valley vineyard. Plenty of sunshine and clay soils produce naturally intense flavours, and a high diurnal range which helps maintain acidity. With a moderate sized crop they are able to allow for a long and slow development of the grape and flavour.

Producer

Based in Blenheim Marlborough, the original company vineyard was planted in 1982 by Ross and Barbara Lawson. They launched the Lawson’s Dry Hills label – making their own wines – some ten years later, in 1992. Today, the company remains family owned and wines include Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling, Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, Pinot Noir and Gewürztraminer, all made from fruit grown in the sub districts of Wairau, Waihopai, Omaka and Awatere Valleys. Accredited with both “ISO 14001:2015” and “Sustainable Wine Growing New Zealand” awards, Lawson’s employs fundamental environmental practices which respect both the specific vineyards and broader environment. In the last 10 years they have won multiple international awards – highlighted by no less than 3 International Trophies for their Sauvignon Blancs with both The International Wine Challenge and Decanter World Wine Awards.

To quote Lawson’s themselves: “There are plenty of Marlborough wine brands, but none have our vineyards or our people, the two most important factors in our business. And very few can say that their key people (including Head Winemaker Marcus Wright and Vineyard Manager Mark Ludemann) have been with the business for almost 20 years. Each.”

Grape Variety

100% Riesling

After gently pressing (the skins are discarded) the juice is fermented at low temperatures with a cultured yeast. The fermentation is stopped when we feel the sugar/acid balance to be perfect. Post fermentation, the wine is left to rest on lees for several months before being bottled here at the winery.

Food Match

With its crisp acidity, this wine is a wonderful aperitif. It is also delicious as a contrast to rich foods such as patés and terrines or subtle-flavours white fish and other seafood. Enjoy with sushi too, salads and ‘green’ flavours such as jalapeno chilli, fresh herbs and dishes that require a squeeze of fresh lemon or lime.

Suitable for vegans & vegetarians.

Time in bottle has helped this wine develop lovely toasty notes to match the freshly drizzled lime and bright, fresh aromatics. Still taut and fresh with a slightly austere lime-skin texture and ripe acidity. Very enjoyable.
