The Riserva 62 Anniversario Primitivo di Manduria is a full throttle, exuberant example of the great Primitivo grape from its spiritual Puglian home. Intense back jam, soft spice, liquorice and dark chocolate combine in this hedonistic wine.
Sava is a town in Puglia, the heel of Italy. Nearby is the town of Manduria which gives its name to the regional wine, famous for its old (often over 100 year old) bush vines. The climate is characterised by high average temperatures with hot summers, contrasted with cool nights which helps to lengthen the ripening process.
Cantine San Marzano was established in 1962 when 19 vine growers established this cooperative, which today attracts over 1200 of them! This creates a unique blend of modern and traditional wine making practices.
Primitivo is now acknowledged to be the same grape as Zinfandel in California. Hand harvested grapes – from up to 100 year old vines – are macerated for 18-25 days. Fermentation at controlled temperatures takes place in stainless steel tanks, before maturation for at least 6 months in French oak and a further 12 months in the bottle prior to release.
White cheeses, good game, or the richest stew in the recipe book.
Suitable for vegans and vegetarians.
