Origin
Bordering Châteauneuf-du-Pape to the west, the Lirac region has almost identical soils (red clay and the classic large galet stones) and classic Mediterranean climate, although the cooling influence of the northerly Mistral wind is probably less pertinent here than in Châteaunuef-du-Pape. With over 2,500 hours of sunlight per year on average, the wines are not unsurprisingly rich in fruit flavours, texture and body.
Producer
Laurent and Julien Bréchet are the relatively new managers (since 2010) of this well established estate. Already renowned producers, the Famille Bréchet own the famous Gigondas estate of Domaine des Bosquets and Domaine de Vaudieu in Châteaunuef-du-Pape. Since they have taken over control, the quality has jumped remarkably and their expert touch can been seen in the quality, texture and balance of this fabulous Lirac. And unlike its more fashionable neighbours Lirac does not (yet) command the same prices in the market.

Recently tried the 2012. Quite refined for a Rhone at this price. Dark fruit with a spicy edge, subtle vanilla and good acidity. Alcohol overpowers it a little.
