Origin
The grapes are sourced from the domaine’s oldest parcel in Gevrey, a plot of 75-100-year-old vines planted by Felix Tortochot in the early 20th century. The lieu-dit lies in the heart of the village, on Limono, Argilo and Sableux soils (a mixture of limestone, clay and sand) and has a south-easterly aspect.
Producer
Situated in the heart of Gevrey-Chambertin, Domaine Tortochot is run by fourth generation Chantal Michel-Tortochot who took over from her father Gabriel in the late 1990s. The domaine boasts 12 hectares of vines spread over 34 separate parcels. Chantal drove the conversion to organic viticulture and eventually achieved certification in 2013.
An impressive 80% of the domaine’s vineyards are in Gevrey-Chambertin and include four 1er Crus (among which are prized sites Champeaux and Lavaux St. Jacques) and four Grand Crus. The average age of all vines at the Domaine is 60 years. Renowned winemaker Sylvain Pataille has consulted at the domaine for the past twenty years and, with Chantal, has overseen a transition to a more elegant and polished expression of Gevrey-Chambertin. All the grapes, from Villages to Grand Cru, undergo a pre-fermentation cold maceration for four to five days and gentle pumping over and pigeage. After fermention, all the wines are matured for 12 months in oak with varying degrees of new oak.
