Italy | 2022
(1 customer review)

£16.50 a bottle

Really fine, dry savoury Italian white, with attractive notes of honey, marzipan and stone fruit. Cavalchina is acknowledged as one of the district’s best producers. Deftly balanced, velvety textured. This simply defines Custoza and challenges any top Soave head on.

Origin

From vineyards just outside the town of Custoza, near Verona (Veneto). The name Amedeo refers to the Prince Amedeo of Savoia who was injured in the Cavalchina vineyards at the Battle of Custoza in 1866 during the Third War of Independence.

Until the early 1960’s virtually all the wine of Custoza would have been sold as Soave, then with the Piona family in the forefront the local producers began to sell their wine as Custoza. Maintaining their position at the forefront of developments in the region, Cavalchina is acknowledged as the leading producer.

Producer

Cavalchina is owned by winemaker Luciano Piona, who has built a formidable reputation for his range of red and white wines. His deft touch makes for pleasing and rounded wine styles without any loss or regional or varietal character. The Garganega and Tebbianello vines come from plots which are over 50 years of age.

Grape Variety

40% Garganega, 30% Trebbianello (a clone of Tocai), 20% Fernanda (Cortese), 10% Trebbiano.

All 4 varieties are picked and fermented separately at cool 18⁰C temperatures for 10-15 days. Each variety then spends about 5 months in stainless steel (there is no oak used) on fine less, prior to blending and bottling.

Food Match

Great match to medium flavoured foods such as chicken and pork, or pasta with a simple vegetable stock, tomato and sage sauce.
