The Côtes du Roussillon is a superior production area in the Languedoc in the south of France. However, Calmel & Joseph also source grapes from other appellations across the region, in their search for terroirs that will produce the desired wines. Languedoc is influenced by a hot Mediterranean climate; in contrast the producers search for cooler terroirs, which often means using the edges of wine growing areas in mountain foothills.

Calmel & Joseph was founded 1955 and is a renowned producer in the Languedoc, not least because they work with growers from across the region. In their search for the best terroirs, the producers source vineyards plots that work as naturally as possible, as they believe they produce wines with the greatest complexity and personality.

Grape Variety

40% Syrah, 40% Carignan and 20% Grenache.

Grapes are sourced from vines with an average age of 50 years. A careful blend of traditionally fermented (crushed) Syrah and Grenache, whilst the Carignan is vinified via unbroken bunches in a carbonic maceration atmosphere. This exaggerates the juicy fruitiness of the Carignan whilst the Syrah and Grenache add the structure and spice and weight to the wine. A good example of “the whole is greater the sum of its parts”.

Food Match

Hits the bulls eye for the BBQ; also good with roasted/chargrilled vegetarian dishes as an alternative. Just right for winter game casseroles.
