Domaine de l’Hortus is run by the Orliac family. The venture began in the 1970s, with Jean Orliac who began cultivating abandoned land parcels in the area and is now responsible for 60 hectares of vineyards. For a lover of rock climbing, the impressive limestone escarpments were an obvious attraction, nevertheless he was one of the first to realise the potential in the scree covered slopes and valley floors for quality wine production.
The picturesque Pic Saint Loup mountain is surrounded by imposing limestone cliffs. The vineyards are situated at the bottom of the valley where coastal plains give way to higher, inland plateaus. This wine doesn’t come under the Pic Saint Loup Appellation, as that only includes red and rosé wines, however the vines benefit from the stony, well-draining soil.
The climate is somewhat unique due to its position inland and above the coastal plains. The tempered Mediterranean climate and high diurnal temperature range enhance the grapes’ acidity and aromatic qualities.
Drink with all white fish and shellfish dishes – simply done, with garlic or a sauce (but not too rich). Alternatively, this will work nicely with a butternut squash and sage risotto. £12.95 per bottle
