“After only its first vintage in 2005, leading Australian wine journalist and judge, James Halliday, gave Willunga a Five Star rating in the 2008 Guide, and named it as one of his top ten newcomers.  A lively fruity blend of Cabernet and Shiraz”  Nick Adams MW

If you’re wondering where the name Willunga 100 comes from, it originates from late Saxon and Norman England – and refers to an administrative unit of government, meaning that 100+ households needed to occupy an area in order to qualify for a place on the map!  The McLaren Vale district was divided up into 100’s and a lot of the vines are in an area that was once the ‘Hundred of Willunga‘.
The tree on the label is an old River Red Gum that stands tall over the vineyards.  It was well over a hundred years old when the first vines were planted in the 1840s.
The soils in McLaren Vale are some of the oldest in the world, estimated at over 500 million years old.  This means low vigour, ensuring low yields in the vineyard, which combined with the old vines produces stunning fruit.  This is a fine example of how well Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz combine, with bold cassis fruit and smoky spice notes.
Renowned winemaker Mike Farmilo who has over 40 years’ experience making wine in South Australia, joined the team as head winemaker in 2013.  He is assisted by Kate Day, who has been with Willunga 100 since the start.
