Origin
This wine comes from a single parcel of vines grown on a 15% gradient, south-facing slope, right at the confluence of the Sèvre and Maine rivers. The Chateau’s name, ‘Coing’, is a derivative of ‘coin’ meaning corner in French, indicating this wine comes from the very heart of the appellation. The soils have a metamorphic origin: gneiss with two micas, covered with a thin soil.
Producer
As its name suggests, Château du Coing de St. Fiacre is situated in Saint Fiacre, a small village in Muscadet’s Sèvre et Maine district. Véronique Günther-Chéreau is the current generation producing wine at the estate, which has been in her family since 1421. Véronique grew up at Château du Coing de St. Fiacre, and after achieving a doctorate in pharmacy, she returned to take the reins in 1990. In 2011, she was joined by her daughter Aurore after she completed her biology and oenology studies in Dijon.
Unusually for an area dominated by négociants, Château du Coing de St. Fiacre remains family-run, using only estate-grown fruit sourced from its 40 hectares of Melon de Bourgogne vines. Their vineyards are planted on distinctive gneiss soils, located at the meeting point of the Sèvre and Maine rivers.
The estate’s Muscadet Sèvre et Maine Sur Lie is fermented using indigenous yeasts and spends the winter resting on its lees (‘sure lie’). According to Muscadet appellation law, the bottling of ‘sur lie’ wines cannot legally start until after the first Thursday in March following the vintage. As a result, these wines benefit from excellent texture and depth of flavour.
The ‘Confluentia’ Muscadet Sèvre et Maine Sur Lie is sourced from a single south-facing vineyard, located at the exact confluence of the Sèvre and Maine rivers. It spends 10 months on its lees and is defined by its distinctive textured and fragrant style. The Monnières Saint-Fiacre, one of Muscadet’s cru vineyards, is made using 100-year-old Melon de Bourgogne vines and is aged on its lees for 42 months. Complex with a full and structured mouthfeel, its freshness belies its age.
