One of the original Bordeaux grapes – back to life in Chile

Bucket loads of dark fruit, spice and individuality from this award winning organic wine.  So what is Carmenère?

2012 Adobe Carmenère, Colchagua Valley, Chile

The Carmenère grape has had a double life!  It was one of the original great grapes of Bordeaux, and for years was also thought to be Merlot by the Chileans. The driving force of vine and grape development in Chile came ironically from a French man – not a Spaniard as you might imagine.  And the focus of these grapes,  of which Carmenère was one, was very much on Bordeaux varietals.
The 2012 Adobe Carmenère is made by Emilio Contreras of producers Emiliana – one of the largest and most passionate organic and biodynamic producers in the world.  It is from prime sites in the Colchagua Valley (one of Chile’s best areas for this variety).  Whilst the wine is dominated by Carmenère,  a sprinkling of Syrah and Merlot has also been added which really rounds off the blend.
Bright black fruits dominate this wine, with a rich vein of clove spice, bell pepper and smoke.  Warm jammy notes and a gentle lick of vanilla oak round off this satisfying wine.  It is rich and full bodied without being remotely heavy.
Enjoy with a good lamb curry or char-grilled meats.  Also excellent with a traditional Hungarian goulash.
