Ch̢teau Cantemerle, 5'eme Cru Class̩2007 Château Cantemerle, Grand Cru Classé
The Château has a very long history, with evidence of the Cantermerle family dating back to twelfth century manuscripts from the La Sauve Majeur Abbey. By the 20th century, after ownership under a succession of families, the estate fell on hard times. It took an ambitious renovation project invested in by the insurance company SMABTP Group – the first of its kind to acquire a Bordeaux vineyard – to get the Château returning to its former glory.
By 1987, 7 years after SMABTP took over, the extent of vineyards increased three-fold to 60 hectares and by 1999 – 144 years after the prestigious Grand Cru Classé classification – the acquisition of 20 hectares of vineyard in Ludon saw the estate restored to its original size of 90 hectares. Since the release of the 2005 vintage you really see the investment made in this period coming through in the bottle.
Located in the Haut-Médoc appellation, on serious fine and deep common Macau and Ludon, the Cantemerle vineyard produces complex wines which are balanced and refined, and in the spirit of its exceptional terroir.
The production of each parcel and grape is vinified separately in large oak vats favouring a slow and gentle extraction of tannins. The wines are aged in barrels for twelve months (of which 50%  are new) and then lightly clarified before bottling at the château.  Made from a blend of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot, 9% Cabernet Franc and 6% Petit Verdot, this is now perfectly mature and at its peak to enjoy now.  We recommend decanting.
This classic claret deserves to be paired with fine cuts of red meat – such as a rack of lamb, sirloin or rib of beef, or loin of venison.
