Vin de Constance, Klein Constantia

South Africa | 2019

£59 a bottle

A world class and historic wine. Beautifully packaged in its original 18th Century bottle shape, this dessert wine is golden in colour, with an exuberant nose of orange peel, soft spice honeysuckle and elderflower. The palate is unbelievably rich, yet delicately balanced. Totally intoxicating and seductive.

Jane Austen and Charles Baudelaire referred to the wine in their writings, and it was favoured by the likes of Frederick the Great, Napoleon Bonaparte, George IV of England and Otto von Bismarck.

Origin

Selected vineyards are located up to 350 metres above sea level, are east and north facing, and are exposed to constant sea breezes, producing a cooler climate than one would think for this part of the world. This creates the ideal growing conditions for Muscat de Frontignan, which are able to ripen fully thus yielding the desired concentrated flavours. The well-drained, fertile decomposed granite soil with high clay content ensures good water retention, which is ideal for the long, dry summers of the Cape, and aids proper ripening of the grapes.

Producer

The estate dates all the way back to 1685 and has an illustrious history: its sweet wines are celebrated in the literature of Austen, Dickens and Baudelaire; sought after by Napoleon during his exile; and its wines supplied the courts of Europe in the 18th and 19th centuries. Klein Constantia was bought by businessmen Zdenek Bakala and Charles Harman from the Jooste family in 2011, subsequently merged with the Anwilka vineyards in 2012, run by celebrated Bordeaux wine personalities, Bruno Prats and Hubert de Boüard.

Grape Variety

100% Muscat de Frontignan from old vines.

Harvest consists of the selection of late harvested, slightly shrivelled Muscat grapes. The wine is fermented in oak barrels, with fermentation taking up to a whole year due to the richness of the juice! It is then kept in barrel for up to a further 5 years on its lees which adds further layers of richness and texture.

Food Match

We would be tempted to drink this on its own after dinner, but would be wonderful with a classic tarte tatin. Also works well with aged and full bodied white cheeses.
