Origin

Vineyards are located on the western shores of Lake Garda in Lombardy, north-east Italy, near Verona which was the famous setting for Romeo and Juliet. The fruit for this wine comes from two vineyards, ‘I Frati’ in Sirmione and ‘La Tur’ in Desenzano, where the soils are a mixture of chalky clay, sand and lime. The resulting wines are rich and structured but still typically fresh and lively.

Producer

Evidence of the Cà Dei Frati company dates all the way back to 1782. It is a model Italian estate, whose vineyards have grown from 12 hectares to 140 hectares over the past two decades. This increase in quantity has been matched by an increase in quality and today the family is broadly recognised as the best producer in the region.

Grape Variety

60% Groppello , 15% Marzemino, 15% Sangiovese, 10% Barbera

The secret to the success of the Cà dei Frati wines is their outstanding vineyards. Most producers in the zone overcrop and train their vines high. At Cà dei Frati, the vines are trained low, newer vineyards have a higher density of planting, and yields are well below the average for the zone. This increases the concentration of juice in the grape, which ultimately creates wine of a higher quality. The wine is fermented in steel on the fine lees for 6 months, followed by 2 months in the bottle.

Food Match

Inevitably one thinks Italian – this could be one of the few wines to cope with the old classic of Parma ham and melon; or even better with the rather posher ‘Piedmontese peppers’. Also works well with pan fried salmon.
