A great value for money red. From Spain’s “deep south” this savoury, strawberry jam red wine has plenty of briary fruits and an open, smooth, juicy palate and texture. Made from the Monastrell grape (aka Mourvèdre in the Southern Rhône), capturing the essence of Jumilla!

Origin

The bodega owns over 500 hectares of vineyards on the slopes of the Penarubia mountain, the highest part of Jumilla. The poor stony soils of the area are noted for yielding richly flavoured, concentrated Monastrell; Juan Gil also has access to further fruit from 30 to 50 year old vines.

Producer

From a producer with 100 years of wine heritage, the Paco Mulero wines are produced from vines cultivated in the north-eastern part of Jumilla – on high slopes with poor chalky, sandy soils. Particularly of note are those made from old, low-yielding Monastrell bush vines.

Grape Variety

100% Monastrell.

Grapes are sourced from vineyards at around 700 metres altitude, around La Aragona. These vineyards surround the cellar, which is 10 km to the northeast of Jumilla. The Monastrell vines have an average age of 25 years. Temperature controlled fermentation takes place in stainless steel.

Food Match

Spot on with a proper Burger, fries, salad and the accompaniments, or any BBQ style grilled meats. Will also work with a vegetable and tomato ratatouille and salad.

  1. ryanbrady1981

Fresh and forward, the palate is fruit focused with more ripe bramble and plum fruit; juicy with aromas of crunchy red berries and strawberry, a hint of spice and mocha – some weight and complexity with a supple finish.

  2. Will (verified owner)

Didn’t realise until this arrived that I accidentally asked for a full box, not a single bottle to try… thankfully it’s a fabulous wine. Really fruity and superb value!
