Origin

This Syrah, like our other listing its sister the Francophile Chenin Blanc, comes from a very regal home indeed – de Morgenzon in Stellenbosch. Again we have access to another “off cut” from this famous estate – and at such a superb value for money price – another must buy. It is a good example of how Rick’s contacts lead to such discoveries which others would not have the opportunity to source.

We think this is a great way to start our association with Richard and look forward to bringing you further findings and releases from Rick’s stable of contacts.

Producer

Over the past 20 years, Richard Kelley MW has become one of the most respected authorities on South African wine. Between 1995 and 2002, he lived and worked in the Cape, witnessing the renaissance of the post-apartheid wine industry. Throughout this time, he established a healthy rapport with the great and the good of the local wine scene, affording him access to their distinguished cellars. Along the way he started to discover small parcels of wine and engaged some of the finest Cape winemakers in project work with him. You might say he became a “Cape Crusader!” (enough Editor).

Expect the unexpected. The Liberator doesn’t adhere to any standard formula for selecting “Episodes” – by that he means new releases. There is no set style or quantity. No fixed price point. Rest assured that whatever the wine it’s received Richard’s own seal of approval. Who knows where The Liberator might take us next …?

Grape Variety

100% Syrah.

On his regular visits around the Cape, Richard is confounded by the number of great parcels of wine that are might be an occasional experimental batch, or possibly an interesting off-cut from some proud winemaker’s latest premium release. Whatever their provenance, it’s his mission as The Liberator to procure these precious vinous orphans and consign them to a more focused theme.

Food Match

Best with a rustic beef (or lamb) stew or casserole. Would also work well with a mild curried mixed pulses, onion and tomato casserole.
