Origin
The Blaauwklippen Valley is situated in the heart of the Stellenbosch wine region, with the Helderberg mountain to the south and Simonsberg Mountain further north. The area has a relatively hot and dry climate, although maritime breezes arise from False Bay which aids the cultivation of white varieties in particular.
Producer
The Waterford Estate came about through the collaboration of two families – the Ords and the Arnolds – who purchased these prime vineyards sites in the picturesque Blaauwklippen Valley in 1998. They built a new winery and revitalised existing vines and orchards that were in place. The property now boasts 120 hectares in the heart of the Stellenbosch region. Kevin Arnold is cellar master and has over 20 years’ experience in the area.
Grape Variety
91% Cabernet Sauvignon , 4% Merlot, 3% Petit Verdot and 2% Cabernet Franc
Winemaker, Mark Le Roux, has rated this vintage as one of Waterford Estates best to date. Winter was cut a little short with temperatures rising quickly in August, the growing season remained warm and dry bringing the harvest dates slightly forward. Moderate to cool conditions during ripening resulted in wines with expressive aromatics and flavours. Exceptional white and red wines from this vintage, very classic in style.
Food Match
With the classical earthy and savoury characteristics of the wine along with the dry tannin structure, classical red meat dishes seasoned with cracked sea salt pair well but also pairs well with other savoury dishes.
Alcohol Percentage
13.5%
