Adobe Carmenère, Emiliana Organic

Chile | 2020

£8.95 a bottle

Carmenère is the grape with a double life – for years was thought to be Merlot in Chile! Full of black fruits and white pepper dusting. One of the original great grapes of Bordeaux, made here by the largest organic and biodynamic producer in South America. Purplish-red colour. Intensely fruity nose, with standout plum and redcurrant aromas and hints of toast and blackcurrants. Smooth, ripe, velvety tannins and good density. An enjoyable and persistent finish.

Origin

The grapes for this wine are sourced from the Colchagua Valley appellation, part of an impressive 997 hectares of Chilean vineyard under Emiliana’s ownership. The conditions in the valley are ideal to grow red varietals such as Carmenère; the area experiences hot summers, featuring a high diurnal temperature range, with cooling influences from mountain and ocean breezes. The wine produced is well balanced, as warm days boost sugar levels and ripen the tannins whilst the cooler nights preserve the important levels of acidity.

Producer

Emiliana is famous the world over for its sustainable and eco-friendly approach to wine production, and remain the largest organic and biodynamic wine producers in South America. They began employing sustainable management practices in 1998, into which they incorporated the International Organisation of Standards 14001 certification – the first Chilean winery to do so. By 2009, their Los Robles estate achieved Carbon Neutral certification by the TÜV SÜD group.

Emiliana not only believe that their practices are important on an environmental basis, but are also the key to producing better quality grapes (and wine) from better-balanced, healthier and more efficient vines. The Adobe is a wine featured in their organic range.

Grape Variety

A blend of 86% Carmenère, 8% Syrah and 6% Merlot.

Grapes are hand harvested and undergo pre-fermentation cold treatment to help extract more fruit character. Malolactic fermentation takes place naturally, after which 20% of the wine is aged in French oak barrels for 6 months.

Food Match

Something with a bit of spice would work a treat, perhaps Asian or pasta dishes with spicy sauces and a generous helping of garlic. Also try grilled red meats, chicken, and mild lamb.

Suitable for vegans and vegetarians.
